global consumers are already willing to delegate at least one monthly purchase to a trusted AI agent. Source: eMarketer Global Commerce Report, Q1 2026.

Imagine this scenario: someone tells their AI assistant "buy a birthday gift for my sister, budget €80, she loves perfumes and personal care, delivery by Thursday". The AI searches, compares, selects and purchases. The person receives a notification that the order has been placed.

This isn't science fiction. It's happening now, and it will radically change the rules of the game for anyone selling online.

What is Agentic AI and why it changes everything

Until recently, AI models like ChatGPT were response systems: you asked a question, you got an answer. The action was always up to the human.

Agentic AI is something completely different. It doesn't just respond — it decides and acts autonomously on behalf of the user. It can browse the web, compare products, fill out forms, process payments. The human sets the preferences and goal; the AI executes.

Systems like GPT-4o with browsing, Claude with computer use, and Google's new agents can already make purchases online semi-autonomously. The leap to full autonomy is a matter of months, not years.

How the AI agent chooses where to buy

When an AI agent needs to make a purchase on behalf of a user, it follows a very different process from humans. It doesn't get moved by beautiful design. It doesn't click on eye-catching ads. It isn't swayed by the color of a checkout button.

It looks for structured, comparable and reliable information:

Clear and up-to-date availability: is the product in stock? In which variant? Are delivery times certain? An AI that can't determine product availability will choose a competitor that displays it clearly.

Transparent pricing: What's the final price, VAT included, shipping included? Price surprises at checkout are a problem for humans — for AI, they're a technical impossibility that leads to immediate abandonment.

Complete technical specifications: For electronics, all specs. For clothing, detailed size chart. For food products, ingredients and nutritional values. AI compares specifications, not emotions.

Verifiable trust signals: Real reviews, aggregate rating, number of purchases, clear return policy. AI is programmed to minimize risk for the user.

How to prepare your store for Agentic Commerce

Complete Product schema markup. Every product must have schema markup that includes: name, description, price, availability, variants, images, aggregate rating, number of reviews. This is how you communicate with machines.

Open APIs and documentation. Shopify already supports APIs that allow AI agents to interact with your store — search products, verify availability, start checkout. Make sure your store doesn't block these accesses and your documentation is up to date.

Machine-accessible checkout. An AI agent needs to complete checkout programmatically. This means: as few steps as possible, support for standardized payment methods, no CAPTCHA blocking bots (or AI-friendly CAPTCHA solutions).

Highest quality product data. Precise titles, complete descriptions, exact specifications. An AI agent that has to "interpret" vague or incomplete information will choose a competitor who provides it clearly.

The most important point

Agentic Commerce won't replace human purchases in the short term. But it will add a new type of customer to your store: a digital customer, precise, rational, who buys without emotions and without friction.

Those who prepare their store for this customer now will have a significant advantage when the phenomenon becomes mainstream — which will happen much faster than we think.
